Vietnam is destroying a large number of coral reefs
The islands and reefs controlled by Vietnam are mainly coral islands and reefs, and their areas are very small. Except for Nanwei Island, the others are sandbanks, shoals, and reefs. They are exposed at low tide and most of them are submerged at high tide.
So why is Vietnam so obsessed with building islands? The first is economic benefits. Through offshore operations, Vietnam Petroleum and Natural Gas Group has produced more than 430 million tons of crude oil and 165 billion cubic meters of natural gas, with revenue exceeding US$430 billion and taxes of US$115 billion.
Vietnam also believes that there are still a large number of mineral resources at sea, mainly coal mines, iron ore, titanium ore, crystal stone mines and various building materials. For example, in the coastal areas of Quang Ninh Province, there are about 3 billion tons of coal reserves, accounting for 90% of Vietnam's national coal reserves. Oil, natural gas and fisheries can also drive many industries in Vietnam. At the same time, Vietnam also pays attention to the development of the scope of maritime forces and expands in the direction of Malacca to control important sea routes. Therefore, Vietnam hopes to build more radar stations, monitoring points, ports, and even airport runways through land reclamation to expand the scope of activities and monitoring capabilities of the Vietnamese navy, air force, and anti-ship missile forces.

From Colonial Country to Coffee Powerhouse
The story of Vietnamese coffee begins in the mid-19th century when French colonists introduced coffee plants to the country. The fertile highlands of Vietnam, with their cool climate and rich soil, proved to be a perfect match for coffee cultivation.
Initially, it was planted experimentally on the grounds of Catholic churches in northern provinces like Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa, and later in central provinces such as Nghe An, Quang Binh, and Quang Tri.
Then, in 1908, the French brought two more coffee species to Vietnam: Robusta and Excelsa.
After years of experimental cultivation throughout the country, it became clear that Arabica coffee plants didn't thrive in Vietnam's climate. Robusta, however, flourished in the central Tay Nguyen Plateau, thanks to the region's favorable climate and soil conditions. Coffee production began to center in provinces within the Tay Nguyen area, particularly  Buon Ma Thuot and Lam Dong. While Arabica coffee was initially favoured, Robusta beans soon took the lead due to their resilience and higher yields.
Following the war and a period of economic crisis in Vietnam, the government prioritized coffee production as one of the nation's key industries. By the 1990s, Vietnam had earned its place among the world's leading coffee producers, claiming the top spot in Southeast Asia.
Today, Vietnam still stands tall as a coffee giant, ranking among the world's top producers and exporters. Its high-quality Robusta beans are sought after globally, making a significant contribution to the world's coffee supply.

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — A bridge collapsed and a bus was swept away by flooding in Vietnam on Monday, raising the death toll in the Southeast Asian country to at least 64 from a typhoon and subsequent heavy rains that also damaged factories in export-focused northern industrial hubs, state media reported.
Nine people died on Saturday after Typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam before weakening into a tropical depression. The rest died in the floods and landslides that followed on Sunday and Monday, state media VN Express reported.
The water levels of several rivers in northern Vietnam were dangerously high.
A bus carrying 20 people was swept into a flooded stream by a landslide in mountainous Cao Bang province on Monday morning. State media said four bodies were recovered from the bus and one person was rescued alive. The others were still missing.
In Phu Tho province, rescue operations were continuing after a steel bridge over the engorged Red River collapsed Monday morning. Reports said 10 cars and trucks along with two motorbikes fell into the river. Some people were pulled out of the river and taken to a hospital, but at least 10 people were still missing.
Nguyen Minh Hai, who fell into the flooded river, told state Vietnam Television, “I was so scared when I fell down. I felt like I’ve just escaped death. I can’t swim and I thought I would die.”
Pham Truong Son, 50, told VN Express that he was driving on the bridge on his motorcycle when he heard a loud noise. Before he knew what was happening, he was falling into the river. “I felt like I was drowning at the bottom of the river,” Son told the news outlet, adding that he managed to swim and hold on to a drifting banana tree to stay afloat before he was rescued.
Dozens of businesses in Haiphong province haven’t resumed production because of extensive damage to their factories, state newspaper Lao Dong reported. It said the roofs of several factories were blown apart and water seeped inside, damaging finished goods and expensive equipment. Some companies said they still didn’t have electricity on Monday and that it would take at least a month to resume production.
Parts of Haiphong and Quang Ninh provinces were still without power on Monday. The two provinces are industrial hubs, housing many factories that export goods, including EV maker VinFast and Apple suppliers Pegatrong and USI. Authorities are still assessing the damage to factories, but initial estimates showed that nearly 100 enterprises were damaged, resulting in millions of dollars in losses, the newspaper reported.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited Haiphong city on Sunday and approved a $4.62 million package to help the port city recover.
Typhoon Yagi was the strongest typhoon to hit Vietnam in decades when it made landfall Saturday with winds up to 149 kph (92 mph). It weakened Sunday, but the country’s meteorological agency warned that continuing downpours could cause floods and landslides.
On Sunday, a landslide killed six people including an infant and injured nine others in Sapa town, a popular trekking base known for its terraced rice fields and mountains. Overall, state media reported 21 deaths and at least 299 people injured from the weekend.
Skies were overcast in the capital, Hanoi, with occasional rain Monday morning as workers cleared uprooted trees, fallen billboards and toppled electricity poles. Heavy rain continued in northwestern Vietnam and forecasters said it could exceed 40 centimeters (15 inches) in places.

Southbound – the southernmost record of Tylototriton (Amphibia, Caudata, Salamandridae) from the Central Highlands of Vietnam represents a new species
Trung My Phung, Cuong The Pham, Truong Quang Nguyen, Hoa Thi Ninh, Huy Quoc Nguyen, Marta Bernardes, Son Thanh Le, Thomas Ziegler, Tao Thien Nguyen
Abstract
A new species of the genus Tylototriton is described from Ngoc Linh Mountain, Kon Tum Province, in the Central Highlands of Vietnam based on integrative taxonomy, namely by combining molecular and morphological evidence.  Tylototriton ngoclinhensis sp. nov. differs from all other congeners based on morphological data, allopatric distribution, and molecular divergence. Tylototriton ngoclinhensis sp. nov. is restricted to evergreen montane forests near water bodies on Ngoc Linh Mountain. We suggest that the new species should be classified as Endangered (EN) in the IUCN Red List. This new important discovery represents the eighth Tylototriton taxon described from Vietnam, and at the same time constitutes the southernmost distributional record for the whole genus in Asia.

Description:
"The division's expendables." That's what one division commander called the 1/9th Cavalry Blue platoons during the Vietnam War. The Blues, as they were called, were perpetually understrength and considered to be acceptable losses in hopeless situations--but their amazingly successful record proved otherwise.
Flashing Saber is memoir about mortal combat with the First Air Cavalry Division's reconnaissance squadron. Included is the account of an air-ground raid that killed more high-ranking enemy officers than any similar engagement of the war: a full colonel, four majors and four senior captains.
An expansion and careful reworking of his previous work, Brennan's War, published in 1985, and in the vein of classic memoirs by Johnnie Clark and Frederick Downs, the book is a harrowing firsthand account of life and death in war.****
Review: I’ve read Brennan’s previous book, Brennan’s War shortly after it was published in 1985. A lot of what was in it stuck with me as a classic retelling of some ones honest look at their own experience, their failures/stupidity, and both good and bad choices.
This version adds a lot more nuance and more understanding to what he experienced, and the added snippets add a lot to round out some of the people and tales without watering down the experiences or raw emotion.
His experiences are unique due to his circumstances, and most importantly, he has an excellent way of telling the story. It’s not just a cut and dry “i went here, I did this...” ... but he understands narrative, he understands human emotion, and he is able to convey things in a way many other authors of this genre actually fail to do.

Quang Ninh authorities take maximum safety guarantee for tourists in Halong Bay
Indochina Junk Halong bay - In order to both promote the value of the World Natural Heritage Halong Bay and sustainably protect the heritage, over the years, Quang Ninh has always focused on ensuring security and safety in tourism activities on the bay.
Tumblr media
The province, departments and branches actively promote propaganda and dissemination of current legal regulations on cultural heritage, ensuring security and order, traffic safety, natural disaster prevention, fire and explosion prevention, search and rescue, environmental protection, ensuring a tourism business environment for organizations, individuals operating in socio-economic activities and communities living in the Halong Bay area.
The activities of cruise ships transporting tourists visiting and staying in Halong Bay are strictly managed and monitored; thereby, the sectors and functional forces organize safe visits to Halong Bay for over 2.6 million visitors in 2024; of which more than 1.1 million are Vietnamese visitors and over 1.5 million are international visitors.
Relevant sectors and units regularly coordinate to organize inspections of facilities, infrastructure, operating conditions, and safety equipment of organizations and individuals doing business in Halong Bay. In particular, ensuring security and order, traffic safety; inspecting and handling violations of using watercraft to follow street vendors and exploiting and using prohibited fishing gear in the border area of Halong Bay - Cat Ba island, watercraft operating without registration and inspection; watercraft operators without professional qualifications and certificates as prescribed… continue to be strengthened.
In 2024, the units coordinated to organize 184 patrols and monitoring. Thereby, 45 violations were detected and handled. Administrative sanctions were proposed, with a fine of VND 323,750,000; 59 calls were received and answered to the Halong tourism hotline; 42 households and 1 cooperative were forced to relocate more than 13 hectares of illegal aquaculture cages in Halong Bay.
Along with that, departments, branches, forces, and localities also coordinate to organize patrols, monitor, and prevent vehicles carrying tourists to visit some caves and islands that are not on the route, tourist attractions that have not been announced to welcome tourists according to regulations. In 2024, 13 cases os carrying passengers for illegal squid fishing were inspected and handled; 6 speedboats carrying passengers to visit deserted islands in the Bay…
The province also focuses on the management of water recreation activities in Halong Bay. Quang Ninh has built a dossier to request approval and announcement of water recreation areas in Halong Bay according to regulations; currently, there are 8 announced water areas in Halong Bay: Hang Luon, Cua Van, Ho Dong Tien - Hang Trinh Nu, Cong Do, Ba Hang, Tung Sau, Vong Vieng and Hang Co.
The authorities regularly organize and inspect the business situation of kayak, rowboat and speedboat tourism services on Halong Bay; thereby promptly guiding and correcting organizations and businesses to prepare conditions to serve tourists. Currently, there are 427 ships (317 sightseeing ships, 104 accommodation ships and 4 restaurant ships, 2 cruise ships), 430 kayaks, 102 rowboats and 31 speedboats signed contracts to serve tourism activities on Halong Bay.
On the other hand, to proactively ensure good fire prevention and fighting; prevent, respond to and overcome natural disasters to serve tourism activities in Halong Bay, sectors and localities continue to well implement the province's directives, plans and documents and organize many activities suitable to the situation.
In 2024, Halong Bay Management Board and Quang Ninh Medical College coordinated to organize training, professional training and certification of first aid and transportation of victims at sea for over 41 officials and employees of Halong Bay Management Board, 56 employees of organizations and enterprises operating socio-economically in Halong Bay. Or Halong Bay Management Board coordinated with the Department of Foreign Affairs to welcome and work with the Consulates of the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada to visit and survey facilities, equipment, human resources, response plans, search and rescue to ensure the safety of citizens of the country when traveling to Halong Bay…

In 2024, departments, branches and functional forces coordinated to handle 13 incidents that occurred in the bay, coordinated to search for victims of the ferry sinking at Ha An Ferry Wharf (Ha An Ward, Quang Yen Town) and drowning victims at the beach opposite Reu Island (Bai Chay Ward, Halong City); resolved and handled the incident of barge registration number HP4670 capsized in the Halong Bay World Heritage area…
Thanks to the diversity of activities in ensuring safety for tourism services in Halong Bay, it has contributed to improving the quality of tourism in the area. In 2024, the total number of tourists to Quang Ninh is about 19 million, an increase of 20% compared to 2023; total tourism revenue is about 46,460 billion VND.
